Compress a video on iPhone

To compress a video on iPhone, open FileSnap, choose the video, pick Compress Video, select a maximum size (10, 25, 50 or 100 MB) and tap Compress. FileSnap looks for the best quality that fits the size and saves an MP4. Compress Video needs FileSnap Pro; the free Convert Video tool can lower the resolution but does not aim at a file size.

Pro: Compress Video is part of FileSnap Pro (weekly or yearly subscription). Free: Convert Video, with 1080p, 720p or 540p output.

Compress a video to a size limit (Pro)

FileSnap makes up to three attempts, correcting the bitrate after each one. If it cannot get under the limit, the result says so and gives you the smallest version it produced. If the video is already smaller than the limit, it is kept as it was instead of being re-encoded, since that would only lose quality.

The size limit is a ceiling, not a target: the shorter the video, the better it looks at the same limit.

  1. Open FileSnap, tap Choose files, then Photos, and select the video.
  2. Pick Compress Video.
  3. Under Maximum size, choose 10, 25, 50 or 100 MB. The default is 25 MB, a common email attachment limit.
  4. Tap Compress. A long export keeps going in the background if you leave the app.
  5. When it is done, choose Save to Photos, Save to Files or Share.

Make a video smaller without Pro

The free Convert Video tool changes the container and the resolution. It will not hit an exact size, but a lower resolution usually means a smaller file.

  1. Choose the video and pick Convert Video.
  2. Under Format choose MP4 or MOV, and under Size choose 1080p, 720p or 540p (or Original).
  3. Leave Most compatible (H.264) on for a file that plays everywhere. Turn it off to keep HEVC and HDR at the original size.
  4. Tap Convert and save the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is video compression free in FileSnap?
No. Compress Video is a Pro tool. The free Convert Video tool can reduce the resolution, but you cannot ask it for a file size.
Does FileSnap upload my video?
No. The video is processed on your device and never leaves it.
Why is my compressed video not exactly 25 MB?
The chosen size is a maximum. FileSnap looks for the best quality that fits under it, so the result can be a bit smaller.
What format is the compressed video?
FileSnap saves the compressed video as an MP4.
